I am forced to write something. I must write something before the train gets to Milton Keynes, otherwise I will once again not have written anything. That would mean I’d have to be doing something other than writing, which is mostly working, sitting on trains, playing violin, losing all enthusiasm for exercise, worrying about my children and wondering about the future of the UK.
I have many different topics to explore, but when I see the jumbled list, somehow I don’t know how it ever meant anything. The thoughts were fully formed and interesting in my mind, but by the time they made their way to paper, they were neither of those things. Maybe the fact that when I said “paper”, I really meant my Keep Notes, was part of hte problem. I read some random blog post the other day which suggested that notes that are written by hand are synthesized, and therefore the author remembers them in a way that they do not when they type. They got two groups of students to go to a lecture, then had half of them take notes by hand and half on a laptop. Then they gave them a quiz on the contents of the lecture, and the group that wrote by hand remembered twice as much, or something. Makes sense really; when I write by hand, I’m constructing, not just typing like a monkey on speed.
Right now I am definitely a monkey on speed.
Noteworthy things that have happened in the life of a commmuter in the last twi weeks:
- There were no trains. I stayed at a friend’s.
- My daughter went to a competition at the Royal Academy of Dance. Then we went to Battersea Power Station, which was underwhelming.
- I got a bit further with my Paganini, and my teacher actually only stopped me for corrections in around the 50th bar, which is a record. I think he was being nice.
- It was very cold for May
- My oldest son apparently did some good poetry at school, and got negative points for talking in some other class
- My other son has been enjoying his climbing lessons.
- Apparently Arsenal won the Premier League yesterday
- I read a good book by Daron Acemoglu that is somewhat making me question why we all want to do AI so much. I probably mentioned that already.
- Labour wants to waste a few months arguing about themselves
